First, a bit about me

-- My name is Faramarz Amiri
-- I am a lecturer in *Interactive Multimedia Communication*,  University of Wolverhampton (UK).
-- My main area of interest is training teachers to design and develop their own multimedia materials.

Why grammar?

-- Grammar is important.
-- Grammar is controversial.
-- Grammar is making a comeback.
-- Multimedia has not yet had much impact on the teaching/learning of grammar.
-- Most CALL grammar programs belong to the pre-multimedia age.

Why multimedia?

-- If grammar is about meaningful use of language in specific contexts,
-- Interactive multimedia is, currently, the most suitable environment for putting grammar into context.

What does multimedia offer?

-- The possibility of combining some of the most important elements of language use:
    -  Sound
    -  Vision (e.g. video, pictures, animation)
    -  Text

-- Interactivity
    - Some level of choice, control, and influence

Looking at an example

--  The program we are about to look at:
--  Is a prototype of a multimedia program for dealing with some aspects of the definite article in
    English.
-- Is for advanced adult learners.
-- Its main aim is Consciousness Raising rather than teaching a grammar point.
