Guangzhou Overseas Returned Scholars Association, once named as
Guangzhou Euro-American Returned Scholars Association, was founded
in the 1930s. After the foundation of the People¡¯s Republic of
China, the activities of the association halted. In 1987 when
it resumed activities, it was renamed as Guangzhou Overseas Returned
Scholars Association in order to be in accordance with the Beijing
Overseas Returned Scholars Association.
To meet the demands of China¡¯s construction of the four modernizations,
unite the returned scholars both home and aboard and develop the
spirit to make greater contributions to our construction venture,
Xianyong LI, Zhelong PU and other senior returned scholars, proposed
to restore and reorganize Guangzhou Overseas Returned Scholars
Association in September, 1984. With the strong support of the
government leaders of Guangzhou and Guangdong province such as
Xuanping YE, Nianzu LIU, Qiqi CHEN and many others, the membership
meeting was held on 14th, June 1987, when ¡°The Regulations of
Guangzhou Overseas Returned Scholars Association¡± was passed,
professor Tianli ZHANG was elected the president and the relevant
activities of the association were resumed. Guangzhou Overseas
Returned Scholars Association consists of the alumni of all circles
returned form Europe and America as well as other countries. For
the past ten years, under the motto of ¡°strengthening the ties,
promoting friendship, exchanging experience, encouraging each
other, uniting the alumni and dedicating to the motherland¡±, Guangzhou
Overseas Returned Scholars Association has launched a lot of beneficial
activities and gained the attention and support from the government
and all circles of society.
The leaders of the Communist Party and the nation attach great
importance to the work of the overseas returned scholars. On 23rd,
October, 1993 when Beijing Overseas Returned Scholars Association
celebrated its 80 anniversary of foundation, Chairman Zemin JIANG,
Huaqin LIU, Jiahua ZHOU and other national leaders attended the
meeting for the celebration. At the meeting, Zemin JIANG on behalf
of central committee of the party and the state council, extended
his warmest congratulations and gave important directions, requiring
the alumni to make good and extensive use of the advantage of
all countries for the benefit of our development. It was further
pointed out that the overseas scholars shoulder the significant
and glorious mission and should make continuous contributions
to the motherland and the people.
Guangzhou Overseas Returned Scholars Association is attached to
South China University of Technology, with the present president
of SCUT-- professor Huanbing LIU as the president. We will spare
no efforts to build it into a constructive organization which
unites the alumni and contributes to the construction of the four
modernizations and hope to continue to receive the care and support
from the governments of all levels and the people home and aboard.
