South China University of
Technology (SCUT) is a key university which is directly
affiliated to Education Department. It stepped into
the list of the universities to be focally-constructed
in the 21st century in 1995 and national high level
universities in 2001.
After the construction of
more than 50 years, SCUT has developed into a multidisciplinary
university that boasts engineering, combines engineering
and science, and coordinate management, economics, arts
and law. It now has 28 schools or colleges, 67 four-year
majors, 10 top-class representatives of conferring the
degrees of master and doctorate, 58 representatives
of doctorate, 107 representatives of master, and 11
flexible representatives of the post-doctorate.
SCUT has a very powerful resource
of science and technology, with more than 23,000 members
in teaching and research, among whom there are 2 academicians
of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 academicians of
the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 17 academicians
of both the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese
Academy of Engineering, 1 foreign academician, 5 specially
engaged professors of ¡°Changjiang Scholar Awarding Plan¡±,
7 winners of the National Outstanding Youngster Science
Fund, 340 professors, 657 associate professors, 973
tutors of the postgraduates including 200 tutors of
the master. There are now more than 10300 postgraduates.
SCUT has a group of research
bases with fairly strong power, including 1 national
scientific and technological park, 1 national A-level
architecture and research design institute, 1 national
key laboratory, 2 national research centers of engineering,
3 key laboratories of Education Department, 5 key laboratories
of Guangdong province and a number of research and development
centers of engineering of Guangdong, Guangzhou and SCUT.
In recent years, the scientific
and technological work of SCUT has grown vigorously
and achieved great success. In the past three years,
SCUT has undertaken more than 3200 projects of all sorts,
the fund of the science and technology amounting to
RMB 610,000,000, among which there are 494 projects
of the provincial and ministerial level with a fund
of RMB 9,487,000 Yuan, 258 national projects with a
fund of RMB 97,788,000 Yuan. It won the 41 awards of
the provincial and ministerial level among which are
4 prizes of the national technological invention and
technological progress and its number of patent applications
continuously ranks the top 10 in all the universities
and colleges of the whole country, the potent applications
in 2003 amounts to 206, ranking 8th in all
the universities and colleges and the number of the
warranty amounts to 96, ranking 5th in all
the universities and colleges.
SCUT sticks to the guiding
principle of the scientific and research work oriented
towards the economic construction and makes great contributions
to the economic and social development of the country,
particularly of the Guangdong province. According to
an incomplete statistics, SCUT has in the past 3 years
undertaken more than 2300 scientific and technological
projects for enterprises, creating almost 8-billion
economic profits directly and indirectly.
Stepping into the new century,
SCUT adheres to the socialist direction of running schools,
carries out the three strategies of ¡°Enliven by Openness,
Strengthen by Talents, Prosper by Culture¡±; headed by
the course construction, based on nurturing the talents
and focusing on the science and technology, targeting
to grow bigger and stronger, it will be constructed
into a high-level university of top quality in China
and of fame all over the world.
