South China University of Technology (SCUT) is one of China's
key universities operating under the direct leadership of the State
Ministry of Education, is situated in Guangzhou, a southern metropolitan
in China. The university covers an area of 200 hectares with a pretty
and quiet campus and its residential buildings present a pleasing
mixture of modern and traditional architectural style.
Formerly known as the South China Institute of Technology, it
was established in 1952, through the amalgamation of the former
Zhongshan University, Lingnan University, the South China Joint
University as well as the faculties and technical departments from
other 4 provinces. In 1960, it ranked among the key universities
of China and was renamed South China University of Technology (SCUT)
in January 1988. To date, SCUT has trained nearly 100,000 talented
graduates in science and technology. They worked for China all over
the country but very concentrated in the Delta Area of Pearl River
in Guangdong province.
Since its founding, SCUT has place teaching and research as the
"Two Centers" of its major effort for further development.
SCUT has developed into a major university in South China with comprehensive
disciplines including science, engineering, business, liberal arts
and law. In June 1995, SCUT was selected as one of the universities
into which China will make significant investment in the 21st century
under the "211 Project". In November 1999, SCUT was rated
"excellent" during the Undergraduate Teaching Assessment
organized by the State Ministry of Education, thereby becoming the
first university in South China to pass this national assessment.
In December 1999, with the approval of the Sate Ministry of Science
and Ministry of Education, SCUT became one of the 15 Chinese universities
running the National University Science Park. In the year of 2000,
SCUT's Graduate School, with the number of postgraduates totaling
4,900, came into being on the basis of the Graduate Division.
SCUT has a faculty of over 3,800, with two fellow of China Academy
of Science, one fellow of China Academy of Engineering, one foreign
fellow of Russian Academy of Science and six double appointed fellows(honored
by two universities); 300 full professors, 167 supervisors for doctoral
students. SCUT's total enrollment is over 33,960, including over
13,330 undergraduates, and 6,890 students of long distance learning
and others. SCUT is presently made up of 20 colleges, e.g. the College
of Machinery Engineering, the College of Architecture, College of
Electric Power, the College of Automation Science and Engineering,
the College of Material Science and Engineering, the College of
Paper-making and Environmental Engineering, the College of Science,
the College of Social Science, the College of Internet Education,
the college of Industrial Equipment and Control Engineering, the
College of Communication, the College of Electronic and Information
Engineering, the College of Computer Science and Engineering, the
College of Chemical Engineering, the College of Food Science and
Biotechnology, the College of Business Administration, the College
of Foreign Languages, the College of Electronic Commerce, and the
College of Continual Education offering 44 majors for undergraduates,
61 programs leading to master's degree, 25 doctoral programs and
5 stations for post-doctoral research.
Aim for an international university, SCUT has been very active
in international cooperation and exchange, promoting collaboration
with more than 50 overseas universities. In 1995, SCUT has been
authorized by the Ministry of Education as a designated university
providing Chinese language program for international students on
government scholarship. SCUT has recently set up an International
Education Center which is home of experienced faculty with advanced
teaching methodology and management mode. The newly decorated dormitory
building is well equipped with all necessary facilities. Additionally,
SCUT enjoys convenient transportation and an annual average temperature
between 22≧ to 22≧ for it location in Guangzhou. All these make
SCUT an ideal place for international students pursuing their comfortable
life. Thus far, there have been more than 300 international students
learning engineering, technology, business management, International
Trade, Chinese language and culture in SCUT.
In the new century, SCUT shall attach more importance to Quality
education, enhance the level of Scientific Research and receive
better result with the strategic guidance sited by the former Chinese
Leader Deng XiaoPing----- "Gear education to the needs of modernization,
the world and the future," and turn the university into a high
level, well known university at home and abroad.
