Polymeric materials made from natural compounds can improve the biocompatibility of biomaterials. Natural compounds such as bile acids can be made into useful biomaterials after chemical modifications. Self-healing hydrogels, degradable polymers, shape-memory materials and dental resins will be discussed have been made and are promising in biomedical and pharmaceutical applications.
Prof. Xiao-Xia Zhu obtained his B.Sc. from Nankai University in China and his Ph.D. from McGill University in Canada. He was appointed an assistant professor in 1992 in the Department of Chemistry at University of Montreal where he is a full professor since 2001. His research interests are in the design, synthesis and characterization of new polymeric materials that can be used for biomedical and industrial applications. He was appointed to a Canada Research Chair in polymeric biomaterials and holds a Université de Montréal chair. He has co-authored more than 260 research publications and several patents and has a Hirsch-index of 46. He received the Macromolecular Science and Engineering Award from the Chemical Institute of Canada in 2015.
