Quantum dots as solution-processible photo- and electro-excited emitters are promising and may impact many industrial sectors including display, lighting, quantum light sources, and lasing. Ultimately, all of these applications should be based on quantum-dot light-emitting-diodes (QLEDs). Recently, QLEDs with nearly-ideal efficiency are become commonly available for different colors. The main roadblock at present towards real-life applications for QLEDs is their operational lifetime. Different from OLEDs and GaN LEDs, the failure mechanisms of QLEDs are different yet unclear. This talk shall analyze the unique structures of QLEDs and investigate decay process of the devices. The results reveal a unique pathway for decay of QLEDs under operando conditions. The generally applicable mechanism enabled us to substantially boost the device lifetime of QLEDs with all colors.
