[Abstract]
Electrochemical hybrid energy storage devices, including metal-ion capacitors or sometimes called hybrid capacitors or psedudocap-batteries, are being explored to bridge the gap between high power and high energy requirements. To assure a good ‘marriage’, it is important to assure the two electrodes match both in capacity and rate property. Kinetics imbalance results in large overpotentials in the capacitive cathode and limited rate-property of the battery-type anode. In this lecture, I will first provide some fundamental understanding of the pseudocapacitive effect, and how to distinguish the capacitive behavior from a battery behavior. Then I will present examples how we design electrode materials and device structure to boost the performance of hybrid batteries, including capacity, long-cycle durability and safety operation.
