State Key Laboratory of Advanced Papermaking and Paper-based Materials

The laboratory features a multidisciplinary team of 202 full-time staff dedicated to integrating R&D and industrialization. It brings together 183 researchers, including 87 senior and 88 associate senior professionals, forming a dynamic group with a balanced age structure and a steady stream of young talent. Eighty researchers are under the age of 40, accounting for 40% of the permanent staff. The team boasts one Chinese Academy of Engineering academician and one Member ot the US National Academy of Engineering. The team includes 20 recipients of major national talent awards, such as the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, Changjiang (Yangtze River) Scholar Distinguished Professor, and National High-Level Talent Special Support Plan leaders, and 51 recipients of national-level outstanding young talent awards. The team also includes one chief industry expert, two industry-level experts, and six enterprise-level experts. Additionally, there are 224 affiliated researchers, including 30 visiting researchers and 194 postdoctoral researchers.

Spanning over 21,000 square meters, the laboratory houses China’s most comprehensive experimental and testing platform for pulping and papermaking, with equipment covering the entire pulping and papermaking process (pulping, washing/screening, bleaching, beating, papermaking, pressing, coating, drying) as well as the production processes for micro/nano cellulose, paper-based functional materials, and biomass materials. The laboratory is equipped with internationally advanced instruments for testing and analyzing the quality and performance of various finished products, meeting the requirements of ISO, TAPPI, GB, and other standards. The total value of instruments and equipment exceeds RMB 205 million, including over 113 sets of large-scale advanced instruments. All equipment and instruments are under a centralized management system ensuring specialized operation and open sharing, making the facility fully accessible to domestic and international research institutions, universities, and enterprise partners.
