On July 30, the unveiling ceremony of the Third Affiliated Hospital of South China University of Technology was held at the Foresea Life Insurance Guangzhou General Hospital. SCUT leaders, including Chancellor Yu Xiangcheng and President Yang Zhongmin, attended the ceremony, along with representatives from the Guangzhou Municipal Health Commission, Zengcheng District, and the hospital.

Yu Xiangcheng noted that the joint establishment of the hospital marks a powerful alliance of medicine and engineering. Leveraging its strengths in engineering, SCUT will develop an integrated system encompassing medicine, education, research, industry, and services, promote interdisciplinary innovation through the “Medicine + X” model, cultivate interdisciplinary medical talent, and strive to build a national benchmark for medicine-engineering integration. 

Chen Bin, Director of the Guangzhou Municipal Health Commission, said that the collaboration would achieve complementary advantages between educational and medical resources, and that the municipal health authorities would provide comprehensive support for the hospital’s development. 

Lin Yihui, Mayor of Zengcheng District, stated that the establishment of the hospital in Zengcheng would help address local gaps in medical education and research and drive the development of the biomedical industry. He added that the local government would provide full support for the hospital’s development. 

Wang Jianping, President of the hospital, said that the hospital would leverage SCUT’s research resources to accelerate the clinical application of medical research outcomes while advancing teaching, research, and clinical services.

After the ceremony, university leaders visited key departments of the hospital, including medical imaging, international healthcare, and maternal and child healthcare, to learn more about discipline development and future planning. 

Since the establishment of the School of Medicine in 2014, SCUT has developed a comprehensive talent cultivation system covering undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral education, designated five hospitals as affiliated hospitals, and achieved a top 1% ESI ranking for all eight medicine-related disciplines worldwide.
