Recently, the Caihong Bridge Station project on Guangzhou’s Fangcun–Baiyun Intercity Railway completed the on-site pouring of low-carbon concrete made from shield-tunneling spoil and slurry. The technology was jointly developed by Professor Yin Suhong’s team at South China University of Technology (SCUT), Guangzhou Metro, and Guangdong Huasui Construction Group. This marks the country’s first engineering application of using shield tunneling slurry to produce green, low-carbon cementitious materials.

Compared with conventional cement, this cement delivers excellent performance while reducing carbon emissions by up to 40% and costs by 25%. The technology provides a model for the large-scale, environmentally sound reuse of excavated material, the development of low-carbon building materials, and the development of “zero-waste cities”.
